Mixed reactions as UCU launch new gowns ahead of 25th Graduation

A section of Uganda Christian University (UCU) students have reacted to the new gowns ahead of the 25th graduation (part II) scheduled for Friday, October 25, 2024.

Rev. Assoc. Prof. John Mulindwa Kitayimbwa, UCU’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs launched the new Graduation and Ceremonial Gowns on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

“This part of the Campus Transformation Initiative stipulates UCU’s re-branding efforts. It also symbolises the academic and all-round excellence, tradition and creativity that UCU stands for, combining a modern look while preserving our cherished university values,” the institution’s official X handle posted.

The development has sparked debate among students, graduands, alumni and the public at large, Shalom Insights shares some of the reactions across social media.

There are two sets of new gowns. One for the students and the other for the staff that takes part in the graduation ceremony. But for this particular story, we shall stick to the student’s outfit since it’s what has faced an overall facelift.

Initially, UCU used to have beautiful black graduation gowns. However, now they have decided to switch to sky-blue attire, which has not been widely welcomed yet.

Here are some of the reactions to the post that unveiled the new gown. While some are excited about the new development others have bashed the idea.

Constance Ichuma Asere: “You have really done it. We want to thank the tailor.”

Rosemary Bulyaba: “Love these! Can’t wait for Friday.”

Ahimbisibwe Osborn: “This gown gives Cambridge University graduation vibes. Local man is not ready for this exotic touch.”

Cephas Kagaba: “It seems we are making a mass choir.”

Abura Emmanuel Gerald: “Next time please the students should as well be consulted,  the transformation is becoming wasted now, we as well stalk holders and we deserve to be consulted,  Thankyou but students must be considered in decision making.”

Frank Uche: “But ehhh our good Deputy VC decided to give us gowns for reverends only. What will other students wear/”

Geoffrey Luwagga: “Are these church choir uniforms?”
