Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio and leader of the Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.
The news was confirmed in an official statement released by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber.
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father, Francis,” Cardinal Farrell said.
“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father,” he added.
According to the statement, Pope Francis dedicated his entire life to the service of the Lord and His Church.
He was praised for teaching others to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love especially in support of the poorest and most marginalized.
