The Lion-sending God

By Pastor Senzo Mkwananzi

We love the God who delivers from lions—but can we handle the God who sends them?

In 1 Kings 13, a prophet receives a word from God, delivers it with courage, but then disobeys a simple instruction: “Don’t eat, don’t drink, don’t go back the way you came.” For a seemingly small act of disobedience, a lion meets him on the road. Kills him. Doesn’t eat him. Doesn’t attack the donkey. Just stands there—as if to say, “This was divine judgment.”

This isn’t the Sabbath School God of cute miracles. This is the Holy God who means what He says.

Too many today crave divine platforms but despise divine discipline. We want the glory of speaking for God but ignore the weight of obeying Him. We want the microphone and the large audience but ignore His whispers and the private lonesome closet with Him.

Obedience is not optional. Partial obedience is rebellion dressed in church clothes. The lion didn’t come because the prophet sinned openly—but because he disobeyed quietly.

Don’t just proclaim God’s Word—live it. The God who honors obedience is the same God who disciplines disobedience. Sometimes, the lion isn’t the devil. It’s God reminding you: “I am holy. I am not to be trifled with.”

The God who delivers you from lions can also deliver you to lions!

Prayer: Lord, give me the strength not just to speak for You, but to walk in obedience to You—even when it costs me everything.

May God bless you abundantly 🙏🏾
